For the first time, we are featuring a coffee from La Piragua in Huila, Colombia: an incredibly expressive natural lot from producer Alexander Vargas. We were excited to source this coffee through our friends at La Palma & El Tucán, the innovative Colombian producer whose sister company Equation specialises in exceptional coffee from under the radar producers. La Piragua is a perfect example!
Since 2006, Alexander and his wife Lidia have carefully developed 10 hectares of land, gaining consistent recognition in the annual Cup of Excellence competition. This Pink Bourbon is floral and elegant, with notes of pomegranate, bergamot, strawberry, and black tea.
Pink Bourbon from Colombia has become sought after for its delicate, complex quality. This lot shows a beautiful array of elegant flavour, with notes of pomegranate, bergamot, strawberry, apple, and black tea.
Alexander Vargas has spent his life working with coffee, having grown up on his parents farm. In 2009 he and his wife Lidia decided to invest in their own farm, acquiring the land that would become La Piragua. With only a few coffee trees, they could see the potential of the microclimate and terroir, and began using their experience to create a farm as they imagined it should be. Today, alongside Pink Bourbon, they grow Gesha, Java, Red Bourbon and Caturra. With every season that passes, the have made improvements to their production, adjusting fertilisation, pruning, picking and processing based on meticulous analysis of their coffees. Alongside La Piragua, Alexander and Lidia have sought to work with their local community, including helping start a small school when they had children.
This lot was naturally processed. After harvest by hand, the ripe coffee cherries are sorted and transferred to raised beds for drying. The cherries are dried whole to impart sweetness and texture that is a wonderful match for the complexity of the Pink Bourbon varietal.
